Typically, summary installments face criticism from viewers as a pointless waste of time, or at best viewed as essential in television in the age of episodic releases. However, this wasn't true, but Avatar: The Last Airbender proved it through "The Ember Island Players," a beloved installment in its last season that is now getting a dedicated Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop.

The entire Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender edition was announced recently. It features five Secret Lairs, and although the one called "My Cabbages!" is certainly humorous tribute to Avatar's beloved recurring figure, the remaining sets appear slightly uninspired, with one notable exception: "The Ember Island Players."
Inspired by episode 17 from season 3 of the beloved series, this special set contains these specific cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image portrayed as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
What makes this segment is special
Viewers of the show warmly cherish this installment, which acted as a summary of Aang and his companions' quest leading up to the conclusion. Unlike other recap episodes, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated from financial limitations or production issues. The creators truly wanted to give fans an opportunity to recap the series' story, but they decided to execute it with flair.
In the episode, the main characters watches a theatrical performance based on their exploits at a playhouse on Ember Island, called The Boy in the Iceberg. The play itself is inaccurate, over-the-top, and utterly comical. It excels since it plays with the characters' perception about themselves, contrasting them against how the world (and particularly the antagonist nation) perceives them. It contains the perfect balance of self-awareness, and it results in perhaps the best adaptation of the show released so far.
Worth and pricing
Regarding worth, this represents an excellent Secret Lair due to one key factor: Braid of Fire. This specific card is valued between $20 and $40 through card retailers at the time of writing, and for $29.99 you can snag the full set, or $39.99 for the premium foil treatment.
Magic's Avatar: The Last Airbender set can be accessed for pre-release events on Nov. 14 and launches globally on November 21.
