A Story of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground

Back in 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed I would book a place to stay upon arrival, yet once I got there, a big convention was taking place and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but soon learned the local airport, not like the one back home, closes all night. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering near the casino, thinking it was a place to spend the evening in a place that was open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more people who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed lost as a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked whether I needed help. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she said I could crash on a spare mattress in her student dorm at ANU – a perfect solution, considering that was where my medical school interview was the following day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: a leftover sandwiches she had taken home her evening job. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location to rest to sleep.

Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a woman inviting a guy she’d just met stay in her room. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to the potential danger. As a dad now, I am astonished she offered that help – yet incredibly thankful.

I never did study at that university, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of human compassion. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her good deed abundantly. Our society requires more folks with such compassion.
