British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
