Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, before he to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Presence

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this year. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
