Condemnation Erupts as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Criticism
Individuals from both sides of the political spectrum and the Hollywood industry are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
“What a disgusting and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the statements. She referenced prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health within families.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his party to justify the comments.
Reiner's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally following the shooting of another individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
