Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials voiced fury after the ex-president accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Message That Sparked the Debate

The clip, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who formerly acted in defense or defense roles.

"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to safeguard and support this founding document," the officials stated in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are clear, you can decline illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that violate the law or our founding principles."

Donald Trump's Furious Reaction

The clip seemed to provoke a heated reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.

On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Representatives Respond

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Top Democrats published a combined statement denouncing the statements.

"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our country with exceptional patriotism and honor. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with protective services "to make certain the security of these representatives and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical online messages and withdraw his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement continued.

Officials' Defiant Response

The representatives who participated in the video also published a response.

"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who value this nation and swore an oath to safeguard and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental obligation."

"The most revealing aspect is that the president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."

They continued: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."

More Partisan Reactions

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is requesting the death of government members."

He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of the legislature instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is historic in American history."

The Conservative representative also reportedly told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and determine all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a administration briefing on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."

"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the representative declared. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to organize a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the president's legal commands."

She stated: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
