The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
