Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
