Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key events preceding this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed claims about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
