The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
