Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
