Presence
Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely from the perspective of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their recent residence, the camera – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of sensing the poltergeist, and it looks like guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image in this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed celebrity playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to visit a celebration in Mallorca for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, Channel 4
The Black Phone
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has made the youth on edge. After Finney gets captured by the villain and imprisoned in a cellar, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators providing assistance, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, though Chastain achieves to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, early morning, Film4
The Spy Mystery
The current week's additional entry by the same director delivers a espionage tale as sharp as the polo necks sported by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to identify a double agent inside the organization from five suspects – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, so a delicious mental battle of deception or honesty develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
