Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough
This move put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
