The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Application of AI Tools for New Divinity

The developer behind hit role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently teased its new project, generating immense anticipation within the player base. However, follow-up statements from the studio's co-founder have brought a new dimension to the narrative, focusing on the team's philosophy toward machine learning.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new statement, the studio's founder outlined that the developer is utilizing AI technology for particular supporting functions. These include developing presentation materials, producing early-stage concept art, and creating draft copy.

Crucially, Vincke emphasized that the final assets in the game will be crafted solely by human creatives. "We are creating every line ourselves," he said.

Given that visual development is being particularly called out — we presently have over twenty artistic staff and have job openings for additional talent.

Each initiative we do is additive and designed to letting our team spend more time on actual creation.

Any AI system applied correctly is supplementary to a creative team workflow, not a substitute for their craft.

The news of using AI initially provoked unease among some the community. In reaction, Vincke issued further clarification on online platforms.

"At Larian, we employ AI tools to research ideas, similar to we use the internet and reference books," he wrote. "During the initial planning process we use it as a basic framework for layout which we then substitute with hand-crafted illustrations."

He noted, "Larian brings on creatives for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to follow what a machine suggests."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had in the past detailed the studio's targeted method to this technology, categorizing its use into three main pillars:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to speedily create rough models of scenarios to validate concepts prior to full development.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Researching how AI could one day enhance innovative reactivity, specifically in simulating unforeseen permutations in a vast role-playing world.

He explicitly noted that key artistic domains — including music composition — are not areas where the company is cutting human input. In fact, Larian is expanding its staff in these very positions.

"We are not launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not considering cutting staff to substitute them with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
