The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
