The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

After a quarter-century span, every region of California is enduring dryness. This milestone comes on the heels of difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Map Reveals No Drought

The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program showed that the entire state is clear of dry or drought conditions. This development resulted from multiple significant storms that topped up key lakes like the state's largest lakes well above their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations

Achieving this status included severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, resulting in significant overflow, blackouts, and fatalities. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Until late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were considered experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 washed away those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

But, experts warn that drought-free conditions does not mean complete water security. Current readings of the high-elevation snow show it at approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This frozen reservoir, which provides about a third of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for future water availability. Water officials point out that it is not yet time to make predictions for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance throughout the coming seasons.
