US Military Conducts Deadly Attack in Eastern Pacific, Leading to Four Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking military spokesperson, the American armed forces executed a fatal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Background and Prior Strikes
The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to increase the military presence.
Only on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Tactics Amid Pressure
The government has encountered growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.
While the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official seemed to confirm a broader political objective. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
