What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
At least 16 lives perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.
The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
