When Sunbathers Escaped Violence, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Rescuer Running ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the iconic beach as her personal space. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, noticed pops reverberating around the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her apartment, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display signaled something was wrong.

Positioned on the street, speaking to a duo who had hurried up the slope soaked, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. It was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that large equipment and unshod … He was sprinting at something that certainly every fibre in your being would tell you to go in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage During Crisis

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of moments of valour in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and paramedics caring for many the injured.

Community Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the community, with the patrol base adjacent to the scene of the incident becoming a impromptu medical station. Accounts show that colleagues were also seen taking action, for instance rushing into the water to rescue people who were struggling.

Following the tragedy, messages of gratitude circulated widely. A social media message shared appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “goodness will always overcome evil”.

The group of rescuers published a message, noting they were “processing what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your kind messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the compassion for our responders,” the group stated. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it supports those involved.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many full-time beach safety officers, stated that the staff acted heroically from the moment the incident commenced through to late that night.

“There have been so many moving stories, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a local official.

“The team show dedication every day in keeping our iconic beaches safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that day should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and grapple with the atrocity of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the midst of such darkness.”
