White House Reveals Federal Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a court injunction to block the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
